Earthmoving
This is an idea I saw in the book Powerdown by Richard Heinberg.
One of the last legitimate reasons to burn petroleum in 2016 is Earth moving.
Building causeways, land bridges, berms, dykes and tunnels needs heavy machinery that can currently only be powered by fossil fuels. Fortification of our cities and construction of transport corridors would be prudent use of the declining energy source.

Texas sets wind energy record as turbines produce 40% of the state’s power
On December 20th, sustained winds of 20-30 mph provided 40% of the state’s power in Texas for 17 hours straight.
